DONETSK, Ukraine — The tentative cease-fire reached Thursday between Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels Thursday did little to change the attitudes of soldiers hunkered down here after months of fighting.

"What's the point of these peace talks?" asked a pro-Russian separatist soldier, who declined to give his name for fear of reprisals by opposing troops. "Peace talks are just another excuse for the Ukrainians to regroup after being smashed," said the solider, identifying himself as the Georgian.
